Group Descriptions

Bronze / Advanced Bronze

The Bronze training groups are for entry level swimmers and novice swimmers who have obtained basic knowledge of competitive swimming and are training to master (Bronze) or have mastered (Adv. Bronze) legal technique in all four strokes, starts, and turns. This group is primarily for swimmers ages 12&under, although an older beginning swimmer may start in the Bronze group until they have achieved basic knowledge and techniques of the sport.

Silver

The Silver training group is for swimmers who have mastered legal technique in all four strokes, starts, and turns, and who are now training to improve their times at competitive swim meets. This group will range from swimmers with little competition experience to swimmers who are training to achieve Oregon Swimming ‘A’ times.

Jr. Gold / Gold / Sr. Gold

The Gold training groups are for swimmers who have mastered the proper technique in all four strokes, turns, and starts and who aspire to becoming the best swimmers that they can be. These swimmers are training for lofty individual goals whether it is a College Scholarship, a Sectional/National Qualifying Time, or another individual goal set by the swimmer, coach, and parents of the swimmer. These swimmers are expected to attend all practices and be committed to being the best swimmers and teammates they can be.

Advanced Fitness

The Advanced Fitness (AF) group is for swimmers who have skills that enable them to train with the Silver or Gold groups, but because of other activities or other issues, can or want to only attend a maximum of two practices per week.  High School Season Swimmers often fall into this category.  HS Season Swimmers primarily train with the High School during the HS Swim Season, but want to remain eligible to attend certain NCSC practices and compete at club meets during the HS Swim Season.  AF / HS Swimmers are limited to two (2) NCSC practices per week and will be eligible to represent NCSC at USA Swimming Sanctioned meets during the High School Swim Season.

Advancing From Bronze to Silver to Gold

The advancement of swimmers from one training group to the next is dependant on a variety of different factors. These factors include the swimmers physical development, mental development, social development, stroke technique, physical strength, cardiovascular endurance, injury history, competition results, goals for the sport, attendance records, and other factors. The Head Coach considers all the above factors when deciding where the best place for a swimmer should be in their development as a swimmer. Because there are so many factors to consider, it is impossible to create an exact structure or requirement for moving from one group to the next. At the beginning of each Short Course and Long Course Season, the Head Coach will individually sit down with each athlete and their parents and discuss goals and schedule for the upcoming season. During this meeting, the Head Coach will address what the individual swimmer needs to achieve in order to advance to the next group. These needs will differ swimmer by swimmer, with the goal of putting each individual in the correct spot for the best long term development of the swimmer. Remember that a swimmer who is 12 is going to be swimming for the club for the next six years and just because they may be able to handle the workload of the next group, it may not be in their best interest for their long term development. A swimmer who is 16 years old with the same skill set as that 12 year old has a lot less time in the sport to achieve their long term goals, and it may be in their best interest to advance to the next group. Again, the Head Coach is always considering what the best place for each individual swimmer is for the long run, not just the short term. The Head Coach is always open to discuss his decisions with parents and swimmers upon planning a meeting.
